Question Suspension Tuning for 2001 E320

Hi folks:

I am interested in firming up the ride and reducing the body roll of a 2001 E320. Please point me to the right place/message board thread/url, etc. Thanks so much.

There are quite a few threads on suspension systems, advice and opinions on this forum. Do a search for topics like "suspension," "shocks" or "springs" and see what you come up with. You can also look around in the "Wheels, tires, suspension and brakes" forum. Good luck with your serach.

You can buy performance suspension kits and parts by:

AMG
Brabus
Carlsson
Eibach
H&R
Kleemann
Koni
Lorinser
Renntech

Some also make upgraded sway bars to reduce body roll.

What's on your ride KEV, or are you stock AMG on your E55?

The picture below is what a 2001 E320 with E55 springs/shocks/sways looks like. It was a major improvement in ride but still not harsh. The lowering wasn't very much, but enough for my taste.

Hi jimmydagreek, I am still E55 AMG Stock at the moment. I desire to upgrade to the Kleemann setup in the future.

Thanks very much, folks.

I think KWIK has the exact solution I am looking for. BTW, KWIK, where did you get yours done ? Did you do it at a dealer ? Will the mod void the warranty ? How much did you pay for that ? Also, I noticed that you are in SoCal as well. Please let me know where did you have yours done

Please advise. Mega thanks.

I think KWiK did it himself as he owns a spring compressor. BTW KWiK, I might want to change out my spring pads on the front of my Benz but not sure yet until I install my Carlsson front bumper. You interested in the job?

Technically it can, but it's not very likely, especially if you use the AMG parts.

How much did you pay for that ?
The install: $0, The AMG parts: can't remember, somewhere around $1K

Also, I noticed that you are in SoCal as well. Please let me know where did you have yours done

Will MB dealers sell me the parts ?

Also, will MB dealers do the installation ?

Is it difficult to do ? Without looking into the details, I figure that I can probably do it if I have the right tools. But I figure if the dealers can do it, I'd rather leave it to the professionals.

Thanks KWIK.

If you have part numbers, I don't see why not.

some will, some won't, you will have to ask

Is it difficult to do ?
Not with the proper tools.

You could, but you might want to Email me first

2012 E350 coupe Black/Almond, 61k miles in 2020
Wookiehoth2,

I felt my '01 E320 was sort of "floaty", so I did an upgrade at 100 miles.

I did this all at Globe Motorsport on La Cienega at the 10 Freeway. Got four AMG E55 style wheels, in the size 17 x 8.5 with Dunlop 8000 tires and Eibach springs. The cost was $2300 I think with a trade in of the stock wheels and stock Michelin tires. The cost of the Eibach springs only installed is $500.

I did not change shocks, and at 36k the stock shocks are still holding up quite nicely.

At 22k miles I changed to Pirelli P Zero Rosso tires from Luke at Tire Rack, at $177 each plus $14 per tire to install at a local place here. The Pirelli's are equally sticky to the Dunlops, quieter, a softer ride and slightly less quick to respond in turns.

wookiehoth2: I don't know about paying the dealer to change anything on your car unless you're loaded and don't really care about throwing away a lot of money...There are a lot of very good shops out there and a lot of people like KWiK that know what they're doing and can save you a lot of money. That's just my opinion though and the choice you make will be your own. Good luck on the mods...

I am riding on H&R Sport springs and Bilstein SP Sport shocks and love the ride on my car. I just need to either put smaller spring pads in the front or larger in the rear for a more aggressive stance as my car sits completely level with maybe a 1/4-1/2" lower in the rear.

I think it's might dumb and stupid to pay dealers to do mods as well. But on the other hand, I am also apprehensive to have something unrelated happening and needing dealer to repair and the dealer turns around and says, "sorry, dude, you make that mod yourself and guess what, your warranty is voided."

To have the mods done by folks other than the dealer require me to trust the person doing the mod (but guess what, I don't entire trust my dealer either. at least I can go back to them and ask them to fix it until it is right). Since this is the first MB I own, I would like to ask for all of your help to recommend a couple reputable mod-experts. I will also check with KWIK offline and do more reading and research before I roll up my sleeve or send it to a mod-expert.

Again, mega thanks.

I completely understand what you mean and it takes time to find a trustworthy shop that you will be comfortable leaving you baby with. I have great mechanics at MBZ Motors in Winnetka that will give you great prices and guarantee all of their work. It's one of the biggest Mercedes shops in the valley. They also did my suspension install, all my maintenance and lifters and did great work. I just wanted to get with KWiK and do my spring pad change out if needed so that I may get more involved with the mechanics of my ride. I have also heard that Evosport is great and The Wheels Supply for wheels and suspension is good too but I have not had any work done with them yet.

Good luck in your hunt for shops and I'm sure that you will get a lot of great leads from everyone in here. Just be patient and it will all work out in the end. Let me know if there is anything else...J

dunninla:

EXACTLY how I feel about the car, especially when I switch between the W210 and my sister's BMW 330. That's why I want to tighten the car up a little bit.

jimmydagreek:

Thanks for the tips. Please let me know where is Winnetka. Also, if you have the phone number of MBZ Motors, would you mind sharing it with me ? I would like to call them up and find out a little more.

Kwik:

Would you happen to still have the part numbers for the E55 suspension parts you installed on your car ? Namely the spring, the strut, the sway-bar, etc. I like to take all that to get a quote for price. Many thanks.

Again, mega thanks for all the help, info, and the feeling of camaraderie of MB ownership.
