Tire recommendations

Time for new tires for my '97 E420. I plan to use Tirerack.com. I remember someone on this board once recommended an individual there as being especially knowledegable. Does anyone remember who that was (at Tirerack)?

Thanks

There is a Tire/Wheel forum on this board moderated by Luke of Tirerack.

You can call Luke at Tire Rack. Personally i would recommend the Michelin Pilot Sports which is what i have right now on mine and they're quite a grip on the road.

It depends on what type of tire is needed. The 97 E430 has size OEM 215/55/16 and the Sport Package has 235/45/17. The Pilot Sport is not available in OEM size 215/55/16, however the Pilot Sport is. The Pilot Sport is available in 235/45/17.

I have Michelin Pilot Sport 225-55-16 on my 97' E420. It works just fine and gives the necessary grip when I am driving that car fast.

The Tire Rack is absolutelty _THE BEST_!! I've used them for years with not a _single_ problem ever! Knowledgeable, fast, and they actually have thier own test track and drivers!!!

As to the best tire: that depends on your driving style, and..where you live; climate wise that is!<G> Here's the URL for Automobile Magazines latest high perfromance tire test:

I wonder when that test was done, because quite a number of those tires in the test are outdated. Notice also the article did say the best tire for the Mustang Cobra.

I thought the same thing about the date. It may be resonable to assume that the test was done around 1999. Since a 1999 car was loaned to them. If current the tires test would be the Michelin Pilot Sport, the Yokohama AVS, the Pirelli P-Zero and the Bridgestone S-03.

I have Kumhos on my 99 E430 and they are great. A little more road noise than the Michelins, but better nhandling, especially in wet conditions and they were very inexpensive.

Another good "bang for the buck" tire is the new Dunlop Sport A2.
It has a treadwear rating over 400, traction AA and it's under $100. My friend just got it for his E320 and is very happy with them.
