Engine start problem

I have a '96 E320 that suddenly developed a starting problem. When I turn the key to ON (not to cranking position), the engine starts and the starter remains engaged.

My first thought was the ignition switch, but that did not fix the problem. Can you guys please give me ideas as to what to check next?

Thank you.

Found the problem!!!

There is a starter solenoid wire bundled with the transmission wire harness. Somehow that solenoid wire was shorted and was receiving 12V when the key is set to ON. I bypassed it and is now working as it should.
