Winter vs Standard mode

Is there a way to tell if your Car is in Standard or in winter mode besides looking at the switch? The reason I ask is I can't see a difference in acceleration whether I have it in W or in S so I'm wondering if the switch is broken.

I have a 2000 E-430
Thanks

You should be able to tell!

The transmission starts off in 2nd gear with the selection of W mode. It should be noticeable. I remember thinking something was wrong with the car for a while, until I realized I had hit the S-W switch and put the transmission in Winter mode. The start-off from a stop sign or traffic light was sluggish, until I put it back in Summer.
