Radio DOA and no climate light.

I have 2 problems. I did a search and can't seem to find any answers. I have a 98 W210 wagon. A couple of days ago I got in the car and the factory radio w/CD changer wouldn't power up. It had been working just an hour before. I checked the fuse in the fuse panel and the fuse in the back of the radio and they were fine. Any ideas?

Also, a couple of months ago, the lighted display on the climate control unit didn't light up. I gently tapped it and it came on. But it got progressively worse and now won't come on at all. The climate control system works fine, thankfully. Just no lights. Again any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

They may not be related. I guess you have the 'radio keys' since you checked the fuse on the back so pull the CCU and replace the bulbs in the back. They can be kind of pricey at the dealer but there's a cross-reference at the auto parts store. Pay attention to wattage for obvious reasons.

The radio could have just failed. If you getting power to the radio you should see a display. A radio shop which specializes in MB (or German) car radios can hook up a known good radio to check the car's wiring harness. If that's the case then you have to decide what to do about repair/replacement. Becker NA will do an exchange for the same radio if you are interested.

Hi about ur radio not working, do you have the 6 disc cd changer in the trunk? If you do, try checking the wiring back there and tighten them, if they came loose that could be why your radio isn't working. The Radio/Cd changer all work in one big circuit so if the fiber optic cable (could be an orange wire or yellow) is loose then your radio won't turn on.
As for the climate control unit light being out, the light has probably gone out or became loose. There is special keys that MB dealerships have to pop it open you can go there and they will pop it open for you for free or there is keys you can buy or make if you search the forums for it, mine went out before and I took it to my dealer and they just popped it out and put in new bulbs and it was working good as new.
Good luck!

Yes, I do have the 6 disc changer. I will check that wiring. I have the special tools for removing the radio/climate control unit. I will pull the CCU and check the bulbs.

If I have to take it to a shop that specialises in German audio systems, I might be in trouble there. I don't know of any shop like that in the area. But I will inquire at some A/V outlets to see if anyone can help. Thanks for the suggestions.

1998's don't have fibre optic cable. Disconnecting the changer doesn't affect the radio operation except not playing CD's of course.

You might have to go to San Antonio or Austin. Be careful with Stereo/Tint/Car Alarm installers. They can do harm than good 'learning' how to fix your radio.
