Transmission problems

Hi everybody.
I was hauling my camping trailer up a pretty steep hill today, and was about to shift down to 3.rd gear (automatic transmission)when all of a sudden it would not pull anymore. The engine R.P.M's went up, but the speed decreased. It was almost as the chain had jumped off a bicycle. First I tried to stop the engine and then start it again, but to no avail. I then let the car and trailer roll slowly down the hill just to get out of the road.
NOTHING was working.
After a while I tried to give some throttle, and it started to pull at around 2500 rpm's, and it seemed like it was in 2.nd or 3.rd gear.
I then moved the gear lever thru the entire range from 1.st to park, and back to Drive, and everything was working again.
I have driven approximately 300 km's since then, and everything seems to be working all right.
Does anyone know what was happening??? I would really appreciate some input since it is my first day of the vacation, and If something is about to happen I really would like to know about it.

I might add that I drive a 1999 E220 CDI Wagon
Thanks in advance

Maybe there is some sort of safety switch that disengages the tranny when temperatures get too high (to keep it from burning up)? It started working again after the tranny cooled off. If that is the case, there may have been no harm done. check with a MB tech at a dealership they should be able to tell you. If that is not the case I would sell or trade in the car QUICK!

I went to a MB dealership today, and they thought maybe I had suffered a brief "electronical hiccup", but I too think it might have been some kind of temperature switch that has activated. the outside temp was in the upper 70's (25.5 C.), and the hill was rather long and steep. (Approx 8%),and the camping trailer weighs 1800 kg's (3850 lbs)
I have been driving all day today, and everything have been working all right.

Consider posting your original note at alt.auto.mercedes. That group is frequented by a very technically knowledgeable lot.

Thanks a LOT Fathead.
I just joined the group right now.

I might add that I've continued down all of Sweden thru Denmark, and am now in Northern Germany. Everything is working great now, so I think it was just a glitch.

The best gentleman on the board has already responded. You can bet his answer is correct.

Good luck, and happy motoring.

I went to a MB dealership in Germany the other day, and got a confirmation on my suspicion.
The tranny does have a overload protection, and they said that if it shifts normally, and this have happened only once under extreme load it's nothing wrong with it

Amgwannabe.
I think the orher thread adresses a totally different problem.
They are talking about loosing power after a quick kickdown, but I had been hauling my trailer up these steep hills for several minutes, when it just let go.
Anyway, I'm fairly certain it won't happen again if I just think ahead a little.
