Exclamation starting problem - turns over, no fire

1998 E320 - this problem in inconsistent. When turn the key to start, engine turns over normally, but won't start. Sometimes it goes thru up to 7 or 8 start cycles before engine will start. Then, it runs fine. If I shut engine off right after having the problem, it starts right up.

Yesterday, it stalled while idling. Went thru 7 start cycles, then started and ran fine.

No messages or warning lights are on. Had codes read yesterday, no error codes.

Tech thought possibly something like anti theft kicking in?

Got any ideas???

try using the SEARCH feature and typing in "cps" or "crankshaft position sensor" and you'll see just how common this can be. compare symptoms with your
current situation

It's always a good idea to replace hall effect sensors after 10 yrs/100k miles to avoid be stranded by a cheap, usually easy to replace part. The same goes for fuel pump and "main" type relays.
