2000 e320 trans shift problems

I have a 2000 e320....had to jumpstart the battery after playing the radio too long with the engine off....afterwards the transmission gear shifter would initially shift from P to D but would not return to R or P unless i turned the car off and then shift back to P. After that I restarted the car, shifted to D and experienced the same orig. problem, but, I removed my foot from the brake pedal and the shifter did return to P while running. I dont recall or think I had any water damage to the gear control module...not to say it somehow did happen. I did experience a jerky type of affect when I shifted to D. Could this be a problem with the brake light switch or tcm? Please respond.

Thanks

I would try a battery disconnect for 2 minutes to reset controllers completely first.
