pads and springs

Hey! I have asked other questions about lowering my car but am about to take it in to get it done and have another question. I have a 98 e320 with the e55 staggered 18" wheels. I purchased Vogtland lowering springs and I have read alot of posts on this website about changing the spring pads. I don't know what size I currently have but alot of peoples recommendations are to change to a #1 spring pad - - is this a good idea? I do want to lower it as much as possible without spending alot of cash but also don't want to run into problems with turning the front wheels. If this helps, my tires are 235-40-18 in front and 245-40-18 in back. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Unfortunately, unless you know you starting point, meaning, you know what spring pads you have right now, everyone will just be speculating. The bumps or dots are really easy to see if you take the wheel off. Then you just have to look up at the top of the spring. Someone had posted a really good picture before.

For instance, I was curious about my '99 E320, when I rotated my tires, I was able to tell. In front, I have the "2" bump pad and in the rear, I have the "1" bump pad. My suspension is stock height.

If you use the springs pads that are currently on your car, then you should get the amount of lowering claimed by the spring manufacturer. You won't need to change pads, unless you want to change that drop by a few mm.

To lower your car the max. that you can without replacing your current shock/spring set up, you need to replace your spring pads to #1's.

scottamg - Please let us know how the Vogtland springs ride. I want springs too, and in the past, I've used H&R on BMWs. To me, they ride a little too hard, probably getting too old
