What does this do???????
I've had my e-class a while and i was changing the bulbs recently when i noticed that on right side of the car there was a black box with a switch on it,
it can be seen on that image attached. I have the key for it, but have no idea what it does. I originally thought it was for the alarm, but the car alarm works fine with the switch setting in 1 or 2.
does anyone have an idea what it does? thank you for your help.
P.S: I have a 96 W210 E-Class (European, Avantguarde).

That line going into the box is connected to the air filter box i think, as the wire goes into that but im not too sure.
Also forgot to mention, the key doesn't open the box, the box is sealed closed with the writing in the above post on it.
only thing on the box is a sort of lock which the key goes into, which can be set in position 1 or 2.
The image attached is a picture of the key, its 3/4 the size of
the mercede key used to start up the car.

Even odder......in my Advangarde E, the entire gap between the fender and the filter box is filled by a black plastic water container/reservior that leads to the radiator i.e. I do not have a big gap/hole like DC's. I guess its some sort of airflow aid (like the turbine I put in my airhose)

Haha... pandoras box.
Well since no one here seems to know what it does, i suppose the only thing to do is put the key into the box and turn the switch and see what happens as i drive it about.
Haha... lets hope this guy hasn't messed about with my car http://www.markshields.com/bttf4.shtml

Does it control the aiming of the headlamps?
Somewhere I read something that on cars that have headlamps
with automatic focus/level control, that a switch or something controlled the headlamp aim depending on the side of the road you're driving on....particularly if you have a right hand drive car in the UK.
FHLC may stand for something like "Something or ther Lampe Controlle"
This is probably something that you don't want to have done accidentally - hence the key.

No harm done at all dude, especially since I didn't buy it for the Benz.
However, I must stress that it is NOT a gimmick and works very well on Japanese cars and Bimmers, which don't breathe as well and acceleration not restricted electronically. Had this one in my previous Miata, then BMW, both of which were significantly quicker on acceleration and had about 15-20% improvement on mileage. On the Benz its not so noticeable but nonetheless, about 10% improvement on fuel economy (effect on pickup not noticeable due to the torque delays etc. built into the MB). I would recommend it for Japanese cars but maybe not a Benz.
