Newer style Tail Lights on 1998 w210??
I really like the look of the newer tail lights with the smoked grey and the horizontal lines. I have the older style. I saw a post of a guy named frissen that did it but he couldn't provide details... Does anyone know if this is possible, and where to get the parts?? Please help, thanks,
Dave

You can order the 2000-2001 E55 taillights from the dealer or at Bekkers.com, they will fit on the 1996-1999 cars with minor trimming on the outside light. if you line up the light to the car, you can easily see where you need to trim it. It is very minor.

Here , the Avantgarde and E55 tailights are the same. Red under and dark on top. Here we have 3 models: The Classic (less equipment) , Elegance (no need to say) and Avantgarde (sportier edition, with lower suspension and those lights etc.....)

Dave,
I'm interested in doing the same thing. Just never sure if the bolt/screw points were the same. Let me know how it turns out for you and how much "modification" is necessary...thx

I'll keep you posted but...
I'm somewhat mechanically inclined, but dont have a wide array of tools and knowledge - so I may or may not attempt this conversion. I'm going to check out the microfiche at the dealer more closely and see if it looks to fit. Still waiting to hear from other ppl who've done it. A few have told me they fit with minor trimming... In any case, they're $75 a piece for the tail lights at the dealer, not horrible, so I may just give it a shot. If anyone else tries it sooner, please post and help us out! Thanks,
Dave

MBrabus and LightMan
Past week i was at the dealer and asked it those lights fit properly my 96`MB. Then he went to ask to the guy that works at the electronics area and he said it was a direct bolt-on , needing no modification. But i´m angry , because i´ve ordered the lights at about a month or so , and i´m still waiting for one piece (left light of the trunk) for about 3 weeks or more.ARGHHHHHHhh

light conversion
Well I went by the parts dept at the dealership today. They do offer the avantgarde tail lights here in the USA. They look to be and the dealer believes them to be identical to the E55 lights. They have no info if they fit or not, and Mercedes(1800ForMercedes) had no info either. I was misqoted originally, the entire thing left and right is $260 from the dealer. Sorry to hear you've been waiting so long over there. Please do post once you've gotten yours and installed, let us know how it went!!

Breakdown of parts etc
Ok here it all is, for anyone else who would like to do this conversion I'll soon be attempting - to upgrade from the older style E(210) tail lights to the newer avantgarde/e55 tail lights.
part numbers:
210-820-35-64 $72.15
210-820-36-64 $75.85 (a few dollars more because it has the rear foglight in it)
210-820-41-64 $58.28
210-820-42-64 $58.28
Total w/Ohio tax - 283.00

Like i told, i was waiting for only one light, since i had the other three waiting at the dealer. SInce i was waiting for that light for a long time, i decided to visit another MB dealer and see if they had that light. They had.
So, i cancelled the light that was about to come at the other MB dealer, since i´ve bought it. THere i go all happy to pick up the other 3 pieces ., i come back home and see that those 3 lights were for the WAGON!!!!
Conclusion, i go to the dealer and cancel the purchase of those 3 lights. And they refund me the money.
Then, i go again to the other dealer and ask if they have the other 3 pieces , in which they say only having 2 pieces and the one that´s missing arrives (today).
Here i go again, to get the lights, he gets em, opens it, and one right side light is broken and shattered! My brain said : "Change your car
"
Well, the guy told me that the missing light arrives on Monday, guess i´ll just have to wait and see....![Frown](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif)
By the way, i have the avantgarde tailights in my house and they are really amazing , and i´m sure it will make quite a difference

E55 tail lights
I was at the dealer the other day when I got those part numbers for the avantgarde lens. Lorinser, contrary to what you might think, and although these look the same, the E55 tail lights are a different part number. I dont know why, and dont have the part numbers for the E55 lights - but I remember the parts guy at the MB dealership specifically saying that they were different part numbers....check with your parts department at your MB dealership, they'll be able to tell you the part #'s over the phone. Then go order them from somewhere like bekkers or autoclass for cheaper :-)

Done!! I think it looks 10 times better. It definitely wasn't too hard of a mod to do, although the grinding away of the plastic was a bit tedious and frustrating. shave a little more, try it, shave a little more, try it. Whatever, they're in!! I'd recommend the mod to anyone with basic mechanical skills, and some sort of grinding tool like a Dremel. Don't forget to that:
avantgarde/e55 = smoked
elegance = clear
Thanks to lorinser for the confidence to do it!
