1996 transmission question

First post but long time reader and researcher for solutions to the problems I've encountered over the last eight yrs. I searched the stickies and used the search feature but could not find an answer to this question. Here it goes, my transmission slips intermittently but I have no problems with putting in any gear as I've read a lot of people do. Here's the different part. I have noticed that when it is slipping I hear a different sound coming from under the hood. It sounds like a fan is running fast and the sound appears to be coming from the left side of the engine compartment. Is this a front pump issue? Thanks in advance. Good news would be appreciated but not likely.

Well you have a 17 year old car and you have lived with the issue for eight years, it must not be a big issue-----why has it come to the front burner now----the whining and or whooshing sound may be the torque converter------when was the last time you changed the transmission filter.

Plutoe,Thanks for the reply. The slipping started just recently, right when a buyer was test driving the car, really! I think I worked through the whining by searching other posts. I believe it is coming from the smog pump, not the transmission. Fluid level is a little low so I will top off and see if it happens again.
