'99 E320 - Trans has been shifting roughly for past couple of weeks, and right as I was about to do the trans flush, filter and fill, trans went into limp mode. Took it to indy, had him do conductor plate. Codes were cleared, but trans still goes into limp mode, and even stopped engaging when stopped at a slight incline. Was able to reset by turning off car and turning back on and got it back to the shop. Indy opened the trans, and there's clutch material in there, so he thinks its toast.

Rebuilding locally at a specialty shop is quoted at $2400-$2700. Indy quoted $3400 for the rebuild, but trans isn't his specialty. Since I'm in Hawaii, the best price I've found on a used trans is $1750 shipped (12k/12mo warranty) from Midwest Transmission plus $800(does this seem high?) to install from my indy. Either way, I'm looking at close to $3k to fix. Pros to rebuild - local, warranty local, don't have to wait for trans to ship (1-2 weeks w/i US, maybe longer out here) can buy my own rebuild kit. Cons - not sure exactly what's wrong and what needs to be rebuilt.

Opinions?

If I were living on an island that had a transmission shop---I'd go local!!
