W210 E320 5 speed Auto Gearbox (722.5) problem

Hello there,

I have a 1996 W210 MB E320 car with 5 speed Auto Gearbox (i mean this is an ex-w124 722.5 transmission) with economy and standard program switch. Gears are the followings: P-R-N-D-4-3-2.

The problems are the following:

When i pull the knob to D on the gearbox selector, than the gearbox knob automatically goes left to 4th gear. So therefore no D gear and the 4 gear is midway between 4 and 3 gear. The R gear is midway between R and N. So it seems to me, that the gears have been slided on the gearbox selector levels. The gearbox shifting well...

Can anybody help me how can i repair the above issues?

Thank you.

Regrettably you have a 722.5 very old and complicated to diagnose that is if anyone even understands the transmission----repost in W124

If it was me I would look for someone who has the MB HHT diagnostic software who can read the transmission faults. Take not that any one who has knowledge of DAS Xentry will know that DAS has the HHT incorporated within the software and DAS will automatically flip to the HHT screen and the person will be able to scan the transmission for faults and or follow the prescribed tests

I would start by replacing the shifter linkage bushings.

The shift rod has been setup correctly today. So all of Gears are on own places, but unfortunately the gearbox is still jumping from D to 4. If i push and keep in "D" with my hands, than everything is fine. I mean the problem could be somewhere in the gearbox selector mechanism.

Please see the problem in the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OEkJVZO4Mo

I have the same problem, but mirrored.

What is the problem inside the shifter?

How can i replace the shifter linkage bushings?

Thanks.

I have found the problem and easy to repair it.

The shifting segment was broken inside of my floor shift and i changed the s16/9 switch and the shifting segment as well. S16/9 switch gives D signal to the gearbox and so it can shift to 5th. You can see these items on the following link (number 47 and 50): http://www.mbpartsworld.com/showAsse...rimLevel=20619

I did it within 15 minutes.

Before you buy any items, pull down the connector from S16/9 switch (right side on the selector), it has only two wires easy to find it. Pull the selector to 4th and pick up a wire and short out the two wires and make a test ride. Increase your speed to 100 km/h, when you reached the speed, the rew could be around 2000-2100 RPM, if you have 5th and your transmission is ok.

If you have 5th, than buy the above items and change them. Call your local MB dealer and tell him these parts number. You can find on the above links as well.

Let me know what is the result!

Can it also be done while the shifter assembly is in the car or should I take it out?

Don't need take it out. You need to remove only the center console:

After you can test the s16/9 switch that i mentioned you.

If you need to disassembly the floor shifter, than remove the gearbox knob and with a screwdriver you can snapped out the top of the shifter (it has ears), and you can gently turn it on your knob and you will have enough space to remove the broken shifting gate and install the new one. Be careful with Standard/Economy switch and its wires when you try to make a little space to you for installing stuff.
