Do I need to put ecu into "boot mode" for tune?

I just bought the galetto 1260 to tune my ecu. I'm a complete noob. :P can anyone explain to me if I need to put the ecu into boot mode and if so how do I do that? If you would like I would also appreciate it if you would give me some advice on tuning for a cai. And better performance. Thanks so much.

I stand corrected however the W210 ECU needs to be put into write mode to make changes---other than that I think what you are trying to do is a waste of money!!
