Possible bad starter switch.

This problem just started over a week ago and has been getting progressively worse. When i try to start the car I turn the key and it won't crank or if it does crank sometimes it will rev up then all the way down and shut off. Sometimes i have to try the key like 6 times before I can start the car. My mechanic told me its a bad starter switch and the part is like 700 - 800 dollars. Is this a common issue with these cars and is this price reasonable? I don't really have 800 bucks to lose right now can I drive the car like this and just deal with the constant starting attempts or will the car eventually just not start one day?

I have read that you can have a car audio place install a push to start and that will bypass the ignition switch so I don't have to replace it is this true if so that would be a heck of a lot cheaper.
