Over heated

I was driving my car last night and did not notice it was over heating. My coolant level light came on and everything on the display panel went red and shout down my car.I manage to get it to a near by gas station to let it cool and check the engine for fluids. The funny part about the whole thing was that the oil leaked out and had barely no oil after I had let it cool and started the motor. My lifters started rattle and had to get it towed. The car had a new oil change and made sure all nuts and filter cap was screwed tight drove for days with no leaks so I now the oil change was done proper. The question is what could of made the motor oil leak out. Will be checking pumps, seals radiator hose and everything else I could think of.But need advise and pointers to the problem so I can look at those addressed issus.

If after lifting the hood and an oil spray is not noticable then I would put the car on a lift--------- no doubt all will be clear as to location!!
