Brake Light Switch Keeps Failing

Hello,

I drive a 2001 E320, and the brake light switch keeps failing. The first time I replaced it was about 18 months ago, it lasted 6 months and then the next one lasted 12. I'm about to replace it again, but I was wondering if there's anything else that could be wrong with my car to make them keeping failing?

I should note both were original parts purchased from the dealer.

Also, this time I do have a strange symptom. The first time it failed I just got the " BAS ABS and ESP" warning lights, the 2nd time I got all those warnings but my brake lights stayed on all the time, now this time I have not gotten any warnings, but my brake lights are staying on. I did check all the fuses and everything seems to be in its place.

Thanks for the help!

I believe there is an adjustment on the switch, but I had mine installed by a mechanic so I did not learn how it should be adjusted.

I am having the same problem. I have tried the dealer parts. After the 3rd one the tech said that I must be getting the last batch of the older ones. The new ones are not suppose to fail. But he has no way of determining which are old and which are new.

A gaggle of MB's
do a W210 forum search at benzworld.com in the sitickies, and there is a adjustment "procedure" to make sure it gets mounted with correct lenght on the plunger.

NHTSA

Hi I read your posting about the stop lamp switch. please go to the National Highway Trans Safety Assoc. Web site and enter a safety complaint about this part. I too have had to replace many times. I entered. NHTSA complaint and was contacted by them and told there were not enough complaints on file for a safety recall. They told me more are needed.
