New ign switch, now alarm doesn't work!

Hi all,
My '97 W210 E230 estate had a problem with a jammed steering lock recently. Had I known then what I now know I could have avoided a whole lot of grief, the ign switch and barrel was drilled out and steering lock disabled permanently, this meant the purchase of another barrel/switch/ and sleeve bought from a MB breakers (supplied with the key blade).
This was then fitted to the car and 'Hey Presto' everything works just as before . . . , except the alarm doesn't blink the indicators or pip the siren????
Central locking works fine as does auto-closure of the windows, but when I first tried the button on the key the Red and Green lights in the rear-view mirror flashed frantically and now where the Red light used to blink slowly when the alarm was active it does nothing just eight Red blinks when I lock the car and eight Green blinks when I open it.
The Red light in the key blinks once every time I press the button so I am presuming the key battery is good.
One last clue perhaps . . . the alarm works normally and fully functions when I unplug the multi-plug on the underside of the ign switch . . . go figure

TIA, Colin.

Sorry, I'n a newbie on here. VIN WDB2102372A285490

I have, since posting, tried disconnecting the battery for around 8hrs and when reconnecting the earth the alarm 'pipped' but still no alarm function when the key fob is pressed. Central locking and auto-closure of windows still works fine.
