2000 E320 Cold Start Issue (fuel?)

Hi All.
I'll try to make this concise.

Symptoms:
This ONLY happens when the car has been sitting for a while (a few hours)
Car cranks fine but acts like it's not getting fuel (or maybe spark).
After 2nd/3rd/4th try, it starts right up.
Sometimes it will start but sputter on the 3rd try, I shut it off. Then on 4th try, it starts and runs perfectly.
Once started, it runs like a champ (and will restart easily) in continuous use throughout the day.
But, if I leave it for a few hours, it again hesitates to start (takes 2 tries) but not as bad as morning.

Clues:
It does not feel like a CPS. (car kicks a** all day even when hot)
I DID hit a rock, crush the fuel pump (and replace it) about 4 months ago with an aftermarket pump.
This behavior started about 3 months ago.
I do think my wife ran it to almost empty once.

Questions:
Does this behavior sound familiar to anyone?
Should the fuel pump start running as SOON as I energize the ignition?
Should the main fuel rail "hold" the proper fuel pressure after turning off?

Thanks in advance for any advice.
JH

Hi

First:Sorry for my bad english i m from Germany and new here

I had the same problem with my old Jeep which had basicly the same diesel engine fitted in your car.
The problem you have is that when your car starts cold the injenctor pumps are leaking so you can't get enough pressure in your engine to ignite the diesel.
The solution is to change them but it can happen that the new ones starting leaking after some cold months too.
The other solution is to turn your key and wait 5-10 seconds so the engine have enough time to built up pressure. (thats what i did)
The problem is that when you drive only short distances you kill your battery.
I would use the second solution and when it gets really worse I would buy new injector pumps.

hope I could help

Mercgermany... your English is great und mein Deutsch ist sehr schlecht !

This is a gasoline V6 3.2, but your suggestions may still apply.
A leaking injector would do this.
That is why I thought it felt like the main fuel rail was not keeping pressure while the engine was turned off.
Maybe when my wife ran the car to empty, this caused a problem.
I will try to check fuel pressure.
Thank you for your suggestion.
