E320 transmission..

ok guys i've got a 98' E320 AWD i picked up last week. story behind it is this woman ran over something, punctured the trans pan, lost fluid and of course ruined the trans.

soo.. with that in mind, and not knowing how long it was driven with no fluid, if at all. i decided to plug the hole and fill up the trans to see what it would do before i went searching for another trans.

moves in Park (til it hits the parking pawl) and it also moves in neutral. Reverse and drive its like the brakes are being applied.

i would assume the trans is probably toast, but the steering lock and shifter lock does not work. I'm just curious why is that and maybe somebody has an idea of whats ruined in there (burned up trans/ruined conductor plate). hopefully i'll be dropping the pan tomorrow to inspect.

Take a look and make sure the connector isn't damaged on the front corner.

I think it's "possible" (won't guess as to how probable) that mechanically the trans is still OK. Once the fluid is pumped out, it can't work anymore, which could prevent further damage. Pulling the pan should give you a better idea from what's resting on the bottom.

Did you check the fluid level with the dipstick after refilling?

no the ignition is fine but the steering lock does not work. so with the car off and no key in the ignition, i can turn the wheel as much as i want. same with the shifter. i can move it into any gear, anytime car off or on.

yes i have checked it and it's pretty close to where it should be on the dipstick given the temperature.
