Having problems with my 97' E300 TD.

My auxiliary(radiator) fan motor burned out, so I got a new one and installed it. It works fine, but only when the AC is on. The fans do not turn on when the oil temp reaches a certain temperature like it should. Previously when my motor was burnt out, the AC would not run cold unless I was constantly moving and the engine would overheat as well provided I was in traffic and or idling or moving very slow for a long amount of time. I know that the fan motor works, because like I said, it runs when I have the AC on but it does not engage when I'm idling. I haven't let it get that hot since I only put the fan in a couple of hours ago, but the needle on my temp gauge reaches almost to the 3/4 mark and nothing happens still. I'm very concerned because I am driving from Florida to North Carolina in 2 days and I need the problem fixed. Traffic on 95 will ensure I get into a problem at some point.

The fan should come on when ever the A/C is running, and should not be on when the A/C is off until the coolant temp is very hot, at least that is my understanding. I have recently replaced my electric aux fan and have never seen it run when the A/C is off, and it runs on low speed when the A/C is on. Sounds like yours is fine.

Correct, I've concluded that my problem is not with my fans which work correctly but with my fan clutch which I will be replacing. Plutoe is also incorrect in that the fans come on when the AC is switched on, and correctly so. There is no problem with my AC, as these fans only purpose is to put air over the condenser, not to control engine temperature even though they do to some extent. When traveling at speed the fans will disengage because air is flowing over the condenser naturally. The main belt driven fan with clutch attached to water pump is my problem.

The front fans will only operate when the AC is on...but not all the time, only at predetermined temps.

The way you have explained it (and how Plutoe also understands it), your fans come on whenever you turn the AC on...if this is the case, you have a fault. If this is not the case...then it's the way you explained it that's wrong.

Correct to a point. The twin fans in front of the rad are indeed linked by belt and associated with the AC...but there is also an engine cooling fan behind the rad.

ZAYED,,
I would assume. Mine turn on when I have the AC on and am idling or in park. If I am driving they are not on, I would assume. While idling or at low speeds/parked, there is no air flow over the condenser. so the fans turn on in order to create airflow. While moving, the air flows over naturally removing the need for the fans to spin.

I'd also like to add that even though my clutch in the engine cooling fan is not operating at 100%, my engine has not overheated since I removed my fault radiator fan and replaced it with a new motor.
