E430 4matic shock replacement
Hi all, I tried to replace the shocks on my 2000 E430 this weekend, but when I got up under the wheel well, I couldn't figure out how to get the shock out. I have read that you need a special spring compressor (I have the big jaw kind for separating struts). It looks like the spring has to be compressed on the car. Also, I couldn't separate the upper ball joint or the lower ball joint to tie rod end thing. The tools I had just couldn't hold onto them correctly to apply the right force. Are there special tools for these as well? Is there a (safe) alternate way to get the spring off the shock?

Here is how i did it. No compressor is needed just take your time and be careful. Its easier with the axle removed.
Raise and support the car.
Remove the front stabilizer bar
Disconnect the lower ball joint
use a jack to support the control arm and remove the nuts on the top of the strut
Lower the jack to decompress the spring
Unbolt the strut from the control arm
