Another ABS ETS story...need input
I just purchased a 98 E300 here in socal with 162,000 miles, both ABS and ETS lights were on, no big deal figured I would work through it. Read posts about the K40 relay, brake switch, etc. and just assumed I could figure it out as well. Fast forward I dropped it off at a local indy shop for some work and they come back with the 'you need a ABS pump' diagnosis - $1,400 for the part, $600 for labor as well as bleeding the brakes which needs to be done.
Now I thought these guys jumped to the highest dollar part right off the bat, and I don't like that. However maybe this is a common fix for this issue and I just missed on on my forum reading? I wanted them to change out all rotors, pads, and sensors, bleed the brakes and see what we've got then - but they said no, it is a bad pump that's what the codes say,
So my next step is to do the entire brake job myself which I've done many times, and perhaps see what I've got then - any thoughts on the diagnosis or my next steps to fix? Can't pay $2K for this job and not even get new rotors and pads!! I need some input, Thanks all -

If your Indy friends are correct then you have an unsafe situation---I would get a second opinion from a shop that has the factory software DAS Xentry an see what they come up with---if they come to the same conclusion and you won't believe that the sky is blue(need a new pump)----well your FFFFFFFFF and then join the----Wow I really gota drive an old MB before having the car looked at club!!

And yes I didn't get the car looked at but not my first MB brother, I knew what car I wanted and I assume some work comes with it - would have behooved me to get the ABS/ETS light checked out instead of thinking 'blue sky' that it would be an easy fix but it's all good this will get fixed.
