1997 E40 HID Headlight Replacement
I am not much of a car knowledgable person, but I have an issue with my 1997 E420. Its low beam headlight on the drivers side has gone out, and I need help on replacing it. Can someone please make me a detailed video, or explain to me, how I can replace my HID bulb? and what kind to purchase? It would be of great help!!!

Its pretty straight forward but I can walk you through it.
Now I have a e320 so I have a little bit more engine space than you...so getting access to the rear of the headlamps might be a little different in your case but im sure others can chime in.
1) open hood
2) if you look behind the headlamp, you will see two vertical metal clips. One on the inner side of the light and one on the outer side of the light move these clips towards the outside of the lamp housing...you should hear/feel a pop...and it doesn't take much pressure
3) remove the gray plastic cover that the metal clips were holding in by pulling it back and up
4) the xenon ballast bulb connector will need to be removed. I know benz used 2 different styles for our years, but regardless its similar. you will see either a black bulb connector that is squarish in shape probably 2x4 inches or a red connector. the black connector on my car is held in with 3 screws, where as the red ones can be twisted out.
5) Once you remove the connector, you will see the back of the HID bulb. simply pull the bulb out and replace it. The bulb you need is a D2R bulb I believe
I know this is your first post, but you might want to try the search button as well. good luck...its an easy job.

You will also need to move the headlamp washer reservoir. It is attached to the windshield washer reservoir. Just pull up. It has been a long time since I have done this so I don't remember if the hoses need to be disconnected or not. If so no big deal. Make sure the reservoir is empty prior to starting.

HID bulb socket is usually a 3 screw bayonet mount but you only need to rotate
the mount CCW (i think) and pull out. but accessing the bulb may still be
problematic if your hand won't fit in there
i am not familiar with 97-99 models with washers but i know that with my 99 w/o
washers I can remove the headlight in less than 5 mins, which gives you unlimited
access to the bulb.
figure the first time removal may take 30 mins of slow, careful and methodical
processing. but thereafter, it'll be a snap.
videos are easily found on youtube, e.g.
