Replacement steering wheel - viable?

My last 30 yrs of car ownership has found me pretty much replacing the steering wheels to either racier, smaller, etc. The last 20 yrs I've owned the same (only) pick up truck. So during the last month, I've been trying to acclimatize to my 'new' 99 E320. But one thing that I miss is that smaller steering wheel.

I am guessing that a replacement wheel is impractical, eh? Would lose the bag function, etc. But thought I'd ask about this possiblity anyhoo. Never know what fancy aftermarket thang is out there.

(I miss the ability to quickly maneuver the car in slalom like fashion)

You can sure upgrade to the AMG, Brabus, Schatz or other MB tuners' sports steering wheels AND you won't lose the bag or any other of the functions your original one may have had

Do a search on the board and you'll find lots of pics and choices of real pimp wheels

there are steering wheels that are pimping for the Merc..uses back the original air bags and all..

however, your steering wheel would be the one with the control stuff on it right? i think they'll be making new steering wheels for those..they're stopping production for the pre 98 ones soon..

I saw one that was sweet but at RM3500, its wayyy too much compared to a Momo.. :P

P.S. I get the feeling you're wanting a small wheel, like the Momo's. Not sure if the wheels avail. would be as small as you'd like, but I think they're slightly smaller than stock (afterall, it needs to house the BIG airbag). Mmmmmm, wonder if the new Momo's with the aribag attachments would fit (you'll need new bags tho)????? But remember, even if those fit, you're gonna lose a lot of the classy "limo feel" of the Benz......afterall, its not a ricer

Carlsson9, stop quoting in RM's! LOL!

What brand? Sounds/priced like a Schatz - they're nice and you can get matching leather colors too, Stemags has it.

Hey, you gotto think "international" - USD is the "international currency"! (p.s. everyone should know where you're at by now, LOL!)

not too sure of the brand..but its basically the OEM manufacturer for all the tuners. The steering wheels are used exactly the same by Brabus, AMG and Cralsson, just that the logo's aren't on it

haha..well, its good to be malaysian now Whitey! We always have this saying over here.."Malaysia Boleh" 'translation: Malaysian Can Do it." :p

There's also a German company called Raid that makes aftermarket airbag steering wheels, but as someone else mentioned, you'll lose all your steering wheel functions (if you have the multi-function wheel).

Link

The site's in German, and it'll do some funky things as far as frames are concerned, but there's a nice lineup of steering wheels. I'm seriously thinking of one for my car, since I don't have a multi-function steering wheel.

EDIT: I forgot, there's a US importer/dealer, they may be able to help you with fitment's, etc.

No, I believe it's the same size wheel as the stock, only feels completely different because of the thickness and the grips. It's a very thick wheel so you get more grip and control when steering. It's one of the best mods I ever did...

Any Brabus retailer I assume. Go to their website and check in out. I purchased mine from someone who updated his wheel in here. You might also try Steve (MBenzNL) in here as he usually has his hands on all kinds of wheels. Good luck on your search.

jimmy, how much did you pay for the brabus steering? looks like the one i want to get but can't afford yet..

Raid is basically the OEM company that does stuff for AMG and even Brabus (example pedals)

Well, I believe the wheel retails around $800-1000 bucks but I paid a lot less than that because it was used for about a month before I got it. I have never seen Raid's stuff before. Do you have any info. on the specific products they produce and are they avail. in the US?
