windows, wipers, and turn signal electrical craziness

1998 e320 wagon

It started last year with the all the windows deciding at random times to stop working. Several months later, I decided to yank the radio in anticipation of installing a new one. The volume knob on the radio didn't work at all and was stuck on loud. As soon as I disconnected the radio, all the windows started working again and stayed working continuously for many months.

Then, just the driver side window stopped working with the center console switch, but I could still use the key in the door, holding it in the unlock or lock position to actuate the window. Then the passenger window stopped working. A couple weeks later, both the back windows stopped working, only to have the driver side back window start working again a day later.

Now, the turn signals and wipers have stopped working!

I tried disconnecting the center console switches to see if that would help the turn signals work. It did not. I've had them operate fine in the past with it disconnected. Fuse #41 is not blown.

Might this be a SAM issue? How can I tell definitively if it is?

Thanks,
Steve

"Might this be a SAM issue? How can I tell definitively if it is?"----assuming you have checked all the front SAM's fuses and relays and they are all functional---then you find someone with a MB DAS system to quick test the "extended vehicle network"---knowing that ain't going to happen--- then you can test the 30 or so wires around the front SAM---what was the results of the test??

Thanks Plutoe,

I'll pop the cover off the front SAM and check the fuses, relays, and connections this evening and report back.

You look at the relay schematic printed on the relay---apply appropriate voltage---do you hear a click-----yes----that's a good relay!

fuses, relays, and connections seem OK

The fuses on the SAM were all good. I applied 12v to the (2) black and (2) yellow relays and confirmed the continuity with respect to the schematic on the relay. The green relay did not have a schematic on it. The normal 12v application on pin 85 and 86 did not trigger the relay on it, but other pin combinations did. I'm not too concerned about that one at this point since it is, apparently, the washer pump relay.

The connections on the bottom of the SAM all seemed to be solid.

I've also noticed that the horn does not work, nor does the blend door on the A/C.

Plutoe, I'd be interested in your assistance with reading and reprogramming this thing since you're in the Orlando area. Please PM me.

Thanks,
Steve
