Checking Wagon Self-leveling Accumulators
My 2000 E320 Wagon is riding firm and bouncy in back - signs of accumulator failure.
I've read of two methods to check the accumulators:
1) Undo the hydraulic lines and probe the rubber diaphragm for holes
2) With the engine running, undo the reservoir cap to check for foaming oil
While I do not have foamy oil at the reservoir, cracking open the low pressure connections to both accumulators yielded foamy oil.
My question, then, is whether foamy oil draining from the accumulators is normal, or a symptom of accumulator failure.
Thank you!

Hard to tell, as I found a loose reservoir cap allowing the return line to pump oil onto the ground. Since tightening the cap, no change in fluid level. However, it's possible that the loose cap was just a coincidence.
