Has anyone done a top overhaul?
I'm nearly hitting 110,000 Kms on the odo. I was advised that i'm having some sort of minor leakage, and it's about that time to do a top overhaul. Has anyone done that here in the forum, and if so, what does it usually involve? Would doing a top overhaul now help reduce my chances to go for a full overhaul instead in the future?
will be charges about US 900 for it...
any help will be appreciated..thanks!

A basic top overhaul is a valve job. Confirm where your compression is leakig and if its just the valves go ahead with it. If it requires rings or pistons I would suggest a total overhaul which includes the bearings, cam, and all the lower end parts too.

If your car is 97 or earlier (inline-6) , then it's recommended that you replace the head gasket after 80K or so mile.
Since the 98 on, with the V-6 design, the notoriouls head gasket problem is history

Before You have the Shop do the (TOP) end ..I Would have the Shop do a Compression AND Leakdown test ..WARM !
The Test WILL confirm IF a Valve and or a Piston Ring is Leaking
So That You WONT get the Dreaded call back and Now They have to do the Lower end Because of a Defective Piston Ring...And Twice the Labor costs
The 104 Engines are very Strong and The Headgaskits are Common from 30k on up..They Will leak!
I Have seen Several with over 200k with any lower end work
When You have the (TOP) end done I would recommend that the Timing chain tensioner be replaced and the Egr pipe be Updated . Along with all the rear heater hoses ..The Chains dont seem to stretch ..But The Tensioners do go bad..the Egr Pipes plug up and The Labor with the cylinder head removed makes the replacement of the rear heater hoses is a lot less than with the head on the car ..

Thanks for the replies guys..
will definitely have a chat with the mechanic about this..
i did raise a point on the harmonic balancer which i read from this and other forums. He says that so far, there hasn't been such problems here in Malaysia, or around South East Asia, although it seems to be a pretty big problem in the States.
Sounds like tis going to be expensive..
