Probably answered somewhere, but I didn't find after a quick search..
How do I change the license plate light bulb in a 98 E300? I assume I need to remove the felt cover on the inside of the trunk lid. Anything I need to watch out for?

you'll need to pop out the trunk handle part. but yes, first you'll need to remove the carpet covering. there are plastic popper that can be easily removed w/ small screwdrivers.
The trunk handle is retained by 2 screws, pop that off and you can replace the bulbs.

There is another quicker way guys. Take the handle off and wobble the lens with a gentle pull. There are two hooks on either side on the inside that might bend slightly when you tug it out but if done gently, they won't break (they're quite soft actually) and you'll be able to push them back into postion. I did a more detailed post last year somewhere in here......
