Diff compatibility for w210

I have a 1997 e420 sport, I have done probably 6 hours of research and can't find an answer if any diffs are interchangeable. I found one thread about it but the link with his details was broken.

I'm just trying to figure out if they will bolt up or what mods need to be done.

I am looking particularly at the e300 diff.

Sorry if I wasn't very clear I'm looking for a higher ratio.

Is there a rebuild kit that has a different ratio, or am I going to have to go completely custom?

Also you gave me the answer I was looking for.

the 97 rear carrier is compatible with 98 and 99 E430 (as well as 97 E420) and
uses 2.82 final drive. there are other final drive ratios, even same, but not
shown as being interchangeable with your 97 E420. so, to a great degree, you're
in uncharted waters and will require someone which strong insight into customization
in this area.

Currently working on this project on my E55. It is possible and has been done.

1.) The easy part is the Diff. e320 sedans have the 3.07 ratio diff. It will bolt in but you have to change the yoke to match whichever bolt pattern your car has. It could be a 4 bolt yoke since you have a v8. if it is a 3 bolt you won't have to swap any parts. Plug and play.

That actual hard part is the TCU. You need to see which TCU you have. And see if another V8 benz model with a 3.07 ratio is available as they need to match.

2 Ideas. The 722.6 trans is still in your car as a 5spd so you maybe able to use a c43 TCU from 98 or 99. But that's if the TCU's are compatible between old an new style motors.

Other idea is to see what the m119 ratios are out there for the w140 etc.
It can be done if your willing to put in the work.

Thanks for the info guys!

I gave up on the idea, I'm deciding to go with a mid 2000 e55, because I know I'll just want more and well that would be the peak of the e420.

Thanks for the info. I am trying to get a 3.07:1 in an e430 to cope with the ls1/t56 swap. The 99 e430 is a 3 bolt yoke, and will be scouring the junk yards for a v6 diff for the gear set.

2000 E320 4matic wagon
Differential Question

Hi All, I don't mean to hijack the thread, just have a related question.
My 2000 E320 4matic wagon is in need of a replacement rear differential.
CARinfo data sheet shows gearbox: 722664 12 109167
VIN: WDBJH82JXYX040623 Production date Aug 2000
Anyone know what the gear ratio for this car is? Donor vehicles that will work? I will hunt down a used assembly and swap it out. I don't want to change gear ratios. Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks
James

The e320 is the easiest to bolt up with 3.07 ratio. But a turbo LS maybe too much for that V6 pumpkin, although they are strong. I'd recommend at least using the 3.06 diff from a c55 or clk55 as I believe they are more stout. If you get that diff you just need to change the rear cover on it to one from a w210 e55 as they use the same diff housing with different covers. Then it will mount in your car no prob. But those are 4 bolt yoke designs so you have to swap em out.

Only the ring gear and case will be used. Plan is installing an LSD unit. The e55 and e430 use the same axle part numbers.

EDIT: No turbo lol, just a 6 speed.
