Major Problem

I have a 99 E320 4 door sedan basic...went out to drive the car a while ago and when I put it in drive it goes fine I put it in reverse goes about 3 inches and doesn't want to go any further...I took the rear wheels and calipers off, then got back into the car started it and tried to put it in reverse and the drivers side wheel is the only one that turns the passenger side will not turn.

I then turned off the engine and went back and tried to turn the passenger side hub and it turns alright.

Then I get into the car and turn on the engine and put it in reverse, the drivers side turns...then I shifted gears to go into Park and could hear a loud clicking sound.

I can't figure out if it is a transmission problem or a differential problem. It was working fine just a couple of hours earlier...?

I'm really confused now on where exactly where the problem is. and what it is. Thanks for any help.

If I read it right, you expect open differential to move both wheels together.
That doesn't have to happen, so don't worry about that, but I can't get your "moves 3" and stops" description. Do you rev the engine and car is not moving on reverse?

I found out where the problem was...to make a long story short..it was the handbrake shoes that were locking up the rotor, I fixed that and everything is fine now. Thanks for your response.

I have the same model and year. Few month ago, I noticed that rear passenger side wheel got over heated after a short drive because of this.

The parking brake shoes sits inside the rotor and if not used often, it may not release all the way when you pull the handle to disengage. Before I took the parking brake assembly apart, I pushed the parking brake pedal all the way and pull the handle to disengage several times. This freed up whatever was stuck and no issues again.

I don't think I use the parking brake often enough if not at all. Once in a while, now I just try to remember to engage and disengage to make sure it works.
