auto off headlighte

I just found out that the headlights on my 1997 e 420 are supposed to go off automatically at night . Any idea what I should check to see why mine do not?

If its like my 01 E class, they do not. What they do is if you turn them off, and after shutting off the car, the fogs will come on to light the area for a few minutes then turn off.

Actually my fogs or low beam lights do not turn off at night if I do not shut them off . They are supposed to stay on for several seconds to light the path and then go off automatically.
Any idea why?

You said it yourself, to light the path. Gives you a bit of time to see where you are walking

It didn't come as an option, no sensor was built. It's overrated though. My 1988 Buick has it...

My 96 Chrysler has it. It looks like E210 is unique car from this point though.
