2005 Mercedes-Benz E320 Wagon
Question Value of 1998 E320 Wagon

I just found a 1998 E320 Wagon with 69,000 miles being sold by an independent Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi service and repair shop in California. Their Internet asking price is $8,900, which is about twice what price guides like Kelley Blue Book, NADA, and Edmunds.com say it's worth. Do you guys think $8,900 is a fair price, considering the car's excellent condition and low miles? Another thing is that I know that most folks recommend having a car checked by a mechanic during a pre-purchase inspection. In this case, that might seem a bit out of place since the seller is an independent mechanic specializing in Mercedes-Benz and other fine German automobiles. Any thoughts on this? I would think such a seller has a reputation to protect and would not try to sell a vehicle that hasn't been thoroughly inspected and/or repaired if needed.

I think $8,900 is a MB guy, top dollar number, I don't think many people are out there looking for a 20 yr old wagon at almost $9K. I think $4,500 is 'fair' but what do I know sitting here. What I do know is you can buy a 05 E-class these days for $9K...

2002 E320 4matic wagon aquired 10/25/16
I can tell you my experience.
I just bought a 2002 e320 4matic wagon with 65,000 miles. Options included the 6 cd changer the Bose system and the Comand navigation/radio. It was very clean with the exception of a "shopping cart" type of ding on the front right fender. The Continental tires were at 80% tread. It needed new pads and rotors all around and a new coil spring on the front right as well as wiper blades and "B" service and a new belt. Also the headlight lenses needed to be restored. All total less than $750 in parts and about 4 days of me working on it. Most of which, quite honestly was spent trying to polish out the wiper blade scratches on the windshield. I have not yet addressed the 0 a/c freon pressure but I have until spring to do that.

I purchased it from a dealer for $4300.00, and I probably should have gotten it for less but I am happy.

I certainly share your opinion. This seller has some classic Mercedes-Benz cars on his website, which probably are worth that much or perhaps even more. I just don't see a 1998 E320 Wagon as having reached that distinction yet. Yes, I am aware that there are 2005 E-Class models for the same price. I would, however, prefer an older model because of the likelihood of a 2005 having the problematic M272 engine.

Thank you, Michael, for sharing your experience. I currently have a 2003 C240 Wagon with a little bit over 79,000 miles. I am trying to upgrade to an E-Class. For me, a wagon is pretty much a necessity since I have a disability which may soon require the use of a wheelchair. The problem is that most potential buyers are giving me really low-ball offers for my C240, while I will probably have to pay top dollar for an E320. Here in Guam such cars are impossible to find. So, I am looking in Hawaii and the West Coast of the mainland, preferably California, from where I could ship the car at a more or less reasonable cost.

A gaggle of MB's
If you "crave" a E-Wagon .. then due to age..finding a "good one" under 100K miles is getting rarer and rarer... and frankly "miles" is not as much of a issue whether 69K-125K - meaning condition/maintenance hold as much weight.

Don't ask "if" something has been done - they should give you their version PPI report that shows following are already done:

1) No dash cracks shown on that listing - from what can be seen

2) Need to see seats without "sheepskins"

3) As a "repair shop" - then they will have their version PPI - key element tranny service done/correct with fresh adapter plug - that should have been done

4) Due to age spark plugs are due - that "should" have been already done at $8900

5) Tires-brakes-rotors should all be 75%+ at $8900

6) Yes - standard fluid/filter + fresh coolant - yes at $8900 should all be done

7) Battery new - or less than 3yrs old - should have been done

8) Yes - Lemfoerder/Sach engine mounts should have been recently replaced at $8900

9) Fluids + filters + fresh coolant at $8900 should have been done

10) All accessory function - air con - doors auto lock - key locks - windows - sunroof - all access functions should be 100% this price

11) Cluster + Climate control segments + backlighting should be 100%

12) Front/rear suspension - no shimmy - no abnormal tire wear

You aren't looking for perfect - it's 18 yrs old - at $8900 you're looking for trouble free ownership.

Be sensible - it it tickles you - then you should pick it up in person.

Keep the beat !

Thanks for the advice and guidance. I sent the seller an e-mail asking about the "sheepskins" but haven't received any response yet. I've also been keeping an eye on these forums to see if anyone has for sale what I'm looking for. It could be a newer E320; however, I want to avoid the models with the M272 engine.
