Unhappy Steering problem large or small?

My steering column, out of the blue started to make a rubbing sound as if it was scrapping a rubber piece. This happens when I turn the wheel to either side, the funny thing is that you can hear and feel the rubbing sound more distinctly when you are inside the car with the door closed.
The steering fluid is at normal and I don’t see any leaks on the driveway or garage. Any ideas how bad this is?

4 wheeled car.
I"m no mechanic, but maybe the power steering pump is the culprit?

I hope not... the steering feel is the same. there is no grinding feel to it, and it takes the same amount of pressure to turn...

It's the rubber seal inside the steering column that make that sound. There's nothing to worry about. It won't affect the steering performance at all.

To fix it, you have to take out the steering column and replace the rubber seal, not worth it. Sound hard to believe, but eventually, it'll go away.

Most of the time on a 210 with a squeaky steering wheel, the culprit is the steering rack. There is a bushing in the rack that wears out and requires the entire disassembly of the rack to fix. Usually though, the dealer will just replace the whole rack.

I love this car, but this is the kind of thing that tick's me off, MB must make a lot of money replacing whole assemblys just for a seal... The kids broke the rear side view mirror button, dealer says they only replace the whole console! ($500+) at this rate it will be hard to save for another MB and feel good about jumping back in. How about that Lexus 430 any prev MB owners that now drive one?

MB actually loses money by replacing the whole steering rack. The internal bushing is a lot cheaper than a whole rack, plus the dealer doesn't make as much money either because the labor cost for replacing the rack is cheaper than disassembling the whole deal. The window switch is a part of the unit that includes all 4 window switches and the airbag off indicator. There really is no way to just replace the mirror switch.

Do you think I have bushing in the rack problem too? When I turn the steering it tends to make a rubbing noise you can hear and feel.

It generally comes and goes, but when you put more people in the car it sure does come out....it is quite embarassing!

I'm waiting for a service appointment to have it fixed, I was just curious if this sounds like it?
