engine changed its tune!
1999 E300TD 150k miles
Recently hubby and I were driving on a freeway and suddenly the tone/pitch of the engine changed. The pitch is higher now. We also noticed the pitch goes up when pressing on the gas pedal, and lowers when the gas pedal is released.
The "check engine" light is not on. The car is performing normally as always; just the change in the sound of the engine.
Is the muffler or catalytic converter bad?

Fabbrisd1, it really doesn't sound like either.
The engine sound is not louder, just higher pitched.
It reminds me of my old shift car when the gear was changed.
We just had the a/c compressor replaced, and installed a new belt that runs between the two fans just behind the front grill. No change in sound.

I found an online video of a 1999 with a bad fan clutch. When the fan spins easily by hand the clutch needs replacement.
Our fan has resistance, however, so I don't think that is the problem.
