Which Code Reader to buy for a 2001 W210

Newbie to forum. Apologize if this is a redundant question. I need guidance on which proven Code Reader/Scanner to purchase for my 2001 E320 4Matic Wagon. Looking to reset the TCM after conductor plate replacement. Just finding out the W210 is in a league all it's own with the Scanners/ Code Readers. I have researched and cannot get a proven scanner that works other than the MB Dealer equipment. MB is a US version and driven in states. Thanks.

there are very very few products out there which are robust enough in features
which can read the unique/proprietary MB sensors. you can try reading up on
the various ones here. regardless, you're looking at upwards of $200

MB Scan Tools

As a Retired Mechanic (MB Factory trained) and Retired Tool Dealer (Snap-On...18yr)(Cornwell...8yr)(Arizona Automotive Specialty Tools...My Own Company) I can tell Ya, There are plenty of scan tools that can do the job nicely.
1st Question... How in depth do you want to go? That will directly affect the cost.
2nd Question... How much do you want to spend?
My self, I have 3 Scan tools, The Big Dog: Autel MaxiSys 908 Pro, The Back-up: Autel Maxi-DAS 708 and my Quickie: Launch CReader VII, The CReader VII works very nicely for most of your common MB codes and I go to it first, from there it'll tell me if I need the Big Dog, but most of the time it's all I need.
The Launch CReader VII or newer model costs between $100 and $200 depending on where you purchase it

Code reader can be $12 Bluetooth adapter working with your android and free Torque app.
For reviews of SD-type scanners you can go to http://mbmedic.com/forum/forums/merc...c-scanners.29/

Prior to purchase did you check for verification on the extent of Mercedes compatibility? I'm
asking because at first glance through some of the ads, I'm not seeing Mercedes mentioned.
It is possible there are modules or upgrades you need to have first.

oh, I just looked at photos for that code reader on Amazon.com but (!) didn't see a 38 pin round connector
that you may need to dock the reader with the main diagnostic port under the hood (inside the large fuse
box). did you think that the codes would all be accessible through the ODB port under the dash?

HI,

Yes I thought that. I spoke with a Tech. at a Tranny shop and he stated that I should be able to get the codes from the port under the dash. He had a snap-on and he used the under the dash port as well.
I will order the adapter for the reader and see if that works.
Thanks and I will give an update after I try the 16 pin port.

yeah, post update. the ODB port is limited only to ODB protocols...or a few others utilized by Mercedes.
but the 38 round pin connection is for a whole host of other sensors so it really depends on which
sensors you are needing to work with which determines the code reader needed to read, reset, erase etc

I am also researching for a scanner. Found a seller on eBay for a Vident iLink400 with 38 pin adaptor. Seller says it will work on W210 made after 1997. Thinking of buying it for my SRS fault light on.

The Creader Vll did not communicate through the 38 pin port under the hood.

@charliev68

Did you purchase the scanner?

If so, was it able to clear your SRS light?

Thanks!
