Shifted to 1st gear @ Freeway speeds.. advice?

I was cruising along between 75-80 mph yesterday when my rear wheels suddenly locked up (no prior warning) and as I pulled over to the side, I noticed that the engine redlined. I assume the TCU thought I was in a lower speed and proceeded to slam the transmission to a slower gear. Anyway, I just restarted the car and it's been riding fine again (I don't think I suffered any mechanical issues with this event.. 100 miles driven since yesterday). A few months ago, something similar happened (transmission disengaged with the selector on Drive).

So is this a speed sensor problem which warrants a conductor plate replacement? Some initial searches on this forum tell me this is the main culprit... just want to make sure before I tear into it. FWIW, it's a 1999 E320 wagon with 306,000 miles on it (tranny rebuilt in 2011 but conductor plate was not replaced).

The conductor plate is a possible source of the complaint which you describe, however; its never a good idea to just stereotype complaint and correction on a Mercedes Benz without at least checking the transmission ecu for fault codes. See if there are any faults stored in the ETC.6 and ME ecus so that a solid diagnosis can be formulated.
