Changing wheel types on E240 (Alloys to Steel)- Any tips?

Hi,

I recently bought a nice, low mileage E240 Elegance, with Alloy wheels.
Unfortunately I hate the look of the alloys and would like to replace them with some nice boring steel ones

The current alloys fitted with 225/40 ZR 18 tyres.
I'm looking to fit some 16" rims and tyres instead.
Is there anything I should watch out for or will any 16" mercedes rims be ok?

Many thanks.
Graham

Check out what were original wheels on the car.
Sounds like you are in UK, but please, fill up your location as that is important.
No US E-class model was sold with steel rims, what would be short answer if you are US resident.
Coming to MB wheels, they all have same bolt pattern, but S class is having drastically different offset.
Most of the time the wheels can be changed between different years of E, but starting with W211 MB start using bigger bolts with different radius, so using those wheels on older models require custom bolts.

Hi,
I've no idea what the original wheels were unfortunately.
The owners manual shows wheels of 15, 16 and 17 inch were fitted from new.
I'm guessing 16 inch is more common but i need to keep the outside diameter the same as the current ones too.

What year is it? Here comes the profile fill again.
US W210 models come with 16" in standard and 17" in sport versions, but we have never seen 240 in this country.
I hated the 10-spokes rims on mine for high use of toothbrushes.
My favorite are always classic monoblocks, or 5-spokes form E420

Morning,
I've added a bit more to the profile (I'll add some more later).
The car was registered in late 2001.
Looking through the car I've found an entire set of wheel bolts which I guess were from the original wheels.
The current wheels are 18 inch rims with 225/40 ZR18 Tyres...I'll try and attach a picture of them...

Those are replicas of monoblocks.
One of the best looking wheels on MB IMHO. What you hate about them?
18" is not going to give you good comfort, but lot of owners do the change for the looks.
So I would reconsider replacing the rims and only shop for good tires.

Lol, my niece likes them too.
But I'm nearly 45 and an old fart and I love comfort and a smooth soft ride, so they've got to go.
Just got to find some 16inch alloys that I like the look of now.
Thanks

Would you be closer, I have extra set of wheels from 2008 E class in 16" size and probably would find special bolts for W210 in my garage.
I agree that low profile lowers the comfort drastically and am considering putting those 16" on W212 that come with 17", but I would loose TPMS in the process, or would have to spend big money on swapping TPMS.

Thanks cor the help and advice. It seems that 16inch alloys would have been the standard fitting when new. I will have to source a set of these.
Also, it seems the suspension may have been lowered, so I shall have to get that fixed too to restore some ride comfort.
Cheers.

Right, I've found and fitted a set of 16" alloys which (imo) look a lot nicer.

Now though, I'm wondering if the car has been lowered at some point.
It's an Elegance model so should have nice soft suspension and yet, the ride is not that soft and it bottoms out easily over even small road humps.
My old C220 CDI est used to fly over them quite happily at 30-40mph, no chance of that in the E240. 20mph max and still bottoms out sometimes...

Anyone have any thoughts?
Here's a pic...

possibly....take photos of the suspension and any identifying marks on
the springs to help ID the spring pad number and also the shocks
being used.
