Catalytic Converter Options
I had my oil changed by a mechanic yesterday and while i was there i told him of a rattling noise I have been hearing every once in a while accelerating. I was hoping it was just the exhaust rattling on the metal underbody I drove the car around and was able to get the rattling to start again and he climbed under the car and said bad news! It’s your catalytic converters. Now I don’t think my car is still under the emissions warranty it’s a 96 with 68,500 mi. I have a call in to my local dealer to see if the purchase date might squeeze me in, it should be fine on mileage
Does anyone know if I can replace with aftermarket performance cats or will this possibly mess with the ECU. Seems like a muffler shop could cut the old ones out and throw some throatier ones on for a hell of a lot cheaper if car out of warranty.
BTW, I tried to get the mechanic to cut them open and remove baffles! but he said he didn’t want to go to jail since it was a federal offence and felony. Damn i didnt know it was that severe!

UNDER WARRANTY
Allright I finally heard back from dealer my car is covered under emissions 8 year 80,000 mi till june 2, 2004 lucky me i was told that this is a very high dollar repair.

Good news...
This is really sad.. I just got my 2000 back and the dealer replaced BOTH converters and some pipes in the area... I'm sure glad I don't have to pay for it.. but it's disappointing that everyone seems to have this problem.
Sounds MUCH better now.... I'm sure you will enjoy it.... car also seems to have more power now...

Got my car back with the new CAT under warranty and it sounds much better. FYI if your car is out of warranty do not buy the MB cat, it's a $1200 part. Get the aftermarket for less than $400. They also have a 5/50 warranty. It does the same job and might even last longer than the seemingly shoddy MB cats.

i think i may have the same problem. when my car is idling in the garage - i can here a loud rattle - kind of a hollow noise, very obnoxious. Funny thing is if i throw it in neutral, the sound goes away. i've always guessed it was something loose, and i'd take card of it at the 105K tune up (which i'm 3K overdue for). if i do need a new "cat" what are my choices? i was reading a different thread where someone replaced their MB cat with a different brand and the car went to *%(. i don't want to risk other expensive parts, but $1500 sounds unreal for just a cat - how much is a whole aftermarket exhaust!?! i don't use the local dealership, so that should save me some, but does anyone know what a reputable cat should run - MB or not?

You describe the exact symptoms that my car had when the cat was bad. I would recommend doin an intenet search and buying an aftermarket one with a warranty. All it is is a brick in the tailpipe, a pretty unsophisticated device.
