Mercedes is built for Highway driving only??
 

I noticed that most people who drives their benz on the high way alot had very little problems with their car except for the occasional glitches prone to all European cars apparently.. but those that drives their MB in the city alot encounters alot of problems... why is that?? maybe just coincidence with respect to the people I know who has benz.. Actually, one of the major reason I got a E class was because my boss has nothing but praise for his S600 which has 370,000 km on it with no mechanical problem what so ever according to him... and it still drives perfect. Perhaps the S class has better quality and durability? perhaps, but others I have talked to said E class are by far the most reliable benz you could get. Also, I have a long time family friend who only buys MB and he still has one of the those 1990s S class which has over 500,000 km on it, and it has very little problem as well... could it be all coincidence?? Could it be that our beloved benz doesn't react well to pot holes and the gruelling stop and go traffic?? Perhaps its inherent nature is to be driven only on freeway at speed of over 100mph where it feels most at ease.

Ironically one of the MB techs told me today (I was in for the washer resorvoir to be replaced) advised me to take my car on a long trip. It has been having little irritating "breaks" lately, and I mentioned to him how pampered the car is (I only drive it to work and back, city driving about 6miles per day).

He said the cars were built for the autobahn, and he seriously sees MB's owned by traveling sales people with high mileage and less problems than the pampered vehicles. There may be credence to your theory, Toronto.

Highway driving puts very little stress on a car in contrast to city driving. That's why cars that are driven 100,000-plus miles a year on the interstate feel brand new, compared with inner-city cars that feel worn out after 30,000 miles of potholes, stoplights, curb-hopping, low-speed/high-temperature operation.

If I had 6 miles commute, then I'd use bike.

yup, highway less stress on the engine cuz your mainly at a constant speed when travelling.

city wise, stop and go, braking, potholes, etc etc = more stress.

A combo of both is fairly good for a car. My w202 has gotten 70% highway and 30% city. Now that I'm out of school for vacation, it'll be less highway and more city driving, but it still goes :D
