Quick question.
I'm going down to pick up a 98 E320 with about a 160000 miles. Now they state when they push the accelerator pedal after putting a new battery, that it doesn't accelerate so I'm thinking the TPS sensor needs to be recalibrated. And I'm not a hundred % sure but if I recall, isn't there a Built-in code reader and code clearing function and if so what is it? If I do need a obd tool, can it just be generic or does it have to be a specific function of the tool?

Good OBD will read basic codes, but those cars are first generation of digital vehicles, so codes don't always pinpoint the issue.
For deeper scanning, Plutoe is correct you need 38 pins.
And no, sensor don't fail due to battery replacement.
