Broom sticks work too, but usually you need 1 strut replacement and usually it is passenger side.

Thanks but the car does not have a strut--mechanism appears to be in the top corners of the roof.

Car free at the moment
There are gas charged struts above the headliner at the rear of the car which hold the rear hatch door open. Unlike most vehicles, the struts are not in plain sight, they are hidden between the interior headliner and the roof of the car. If you open the hatch and use a torch to illuminate the hinge area, you will see the head end of the strut attached to a lever on the hinge. Replacing the struts is straightforward, but does involve removing at least the back section of the headliner. I've not done this work on a w210, previous generations of MB wagons permitted just the rear section of the headliner to be dropped to facilitate this repair.

Depends how flexible your fingers are, the job can be done without headliner removal, but sure getting the access makes it much easier.
We had some dispute on other forum what kind of struts they are, but I don't thing gas strut would have hole on the side, like those I have seen.
Not that it really matters - you buy the part per your VIN and have fun doing that. Get a lot of pillows/cushions and reliable gate support.
It will make very bad day if gate closes on your fingers.
