For what it is worth, I have had my 1998 E320 wagon for four years & 40K miles (it now has 294K) and have always used 87 octane with ZERO motor hesitation/knocking/issues.

it could be the result of:
contaminated fuel
electrical
emissions control related
sensors
... you get the idea. not something which can be diagnosed easily via keyboard.
this reauires a dynamic inspection and going through a process of elimination
so get your car to a good car tech and who knows MB. if they have a MB specific
diagnostic device that would be even better

We don't get 93 octane here in CA. I've run 91 in the Mercedes I've owned with zero issues due to fuel.
You have something going on. Have someone with a proper scanner setup scan the car.
