10 MPG with E300 Turbodiesel
Ok I've gotten about 10mpg with my E300 Turbodiesel, there is no smoke coming out the back (so I know it's not running rich), and I'm doing purely city driving, the car runs fine and all, but I've only gone 50 miles and I've already used 1/4 of the 21.1 gallon tank. I was getting 28 on the highway when I drove it back from where I bought it, but now it's getting awful gas mileage. Any ideas as to what could be causing this?? Could it be the fuel itself?

Out Of Control!!
You live in a bad neighborhood and a druggie is siphoning fuel.Or you have a faulty fuel level sensor. Or you better research how to preform a leak oil test---don't ask search or wait for sausage ***** to tell you!

Using dash fuel gauge for estimating 1/4 of tank brings huge error to mind.
Do 2 tanks at least to draw conclusions.
This engine can deliver 32 mpg at moderate highway cruising, or 28 mpg when you average 80 mph.
Did you check top of the engine for fuel leaks?

Diesels can not run rich like a gasser can. If you do not have unusual smoke out the exhaust, it is likely getting normal fuel mileage. Your problem is more likely to be related to your fuel gauge or your assumptions.

I only drive it a few miles here and there and I'm not always flooring it. I went to go see my girlfriend and I started getting 21 mpg (with some highway driving) according to my fuel gauge and trip odometer. I think I'm getting 22 now, but still that seems low compared to what I expected. I don't think there's a fuel leak otherwise it would be leaking all over the driveway.
