Changing your oil

Those of you who do your own oil changes...

Do you use the suction pump or do you let it drain out by gravity?

Is there a cheap source for the pump somewhere?

Do you buy the filters from the dealer or some other source?

Thx in advance!

I'm tired of paying $150 for a simple oil change, so I thought I'd do it myself from now on.

I agree with Mark. I did my oil changes the old fashioned way but just switched to the Topsider. The extraction method is fine except that you need to warm the oil a bit to aid extraction. Some oil like the 15W-50 Mobil 1 I use is more difficult to extract than 0W-40 Mobil 1. However, the next time I'll warm it up a bit more and don't expect any trouble.

I paid $75 for my Topsider. That included shipping.

try this, much easier than a topsider

I've been using this simple device for a few years. I went through a few topsiders with bad gaskets, implosions, etc and have found this so much easier. You can order it online at West Marine for a fraction of the cost of a topsider and it stores easily in a large ziplock bag when not in use. Simply attach a drill to the motor stem and it creates a powerful syphon that never fails. I just did and oil change Sunday and it took around 5-6 minutes to drain the 7.5 quarts in my 97 E320. Feed the thin hose down the dipstick and the other into a bucket and you're off to the races. So much easier than a topsider. Logically, all it should take is a simple syphon and this is just the trick.

If this didn't paste correctly, go to westmarine.com and search on jabsco drill pump

confused by reviews

I read the bad reviews and have to say that I think it may be operator error. I can have all the oil pumped out in the same time that it used to take me to jack the car up and remove the skid plate that covers the oil pan. It's a steady flow of oil too. If your drill is variable you can increase the flow as you feel comfortable. (I never get the drill up to full speed). Never had a problem or a mess. I don't know what this chump was talking about when he says the drill was loud? I have a cordless Ryobi that I use and it's hardly loud. Best if used after warming up the oil for about 10 minutes with the car idling. It used to bother me to no end when my topsider ran out of suction halfway through the process. Don't beleive everything you read on the web...
