Only remote or knob in the ignition will deactivate the alarm.
I wonder why you open the door with blade?
I used the method when going skiing with service key and wife was playing on snow with main knob.
Service key is moisture-resistant and being smaller- easier to carry for sport activity, but bad part is activating the alarm with blade.
You can avoid it by locking the car with blade, when alarm is not high priority.

from my 1999 owner's manual, "The antitheft alarm is automatically armed or disarmed with the remote control or any of your vehicle's
mechanical keys by locking or unlocking the driver's door or the trunk."

I'm not sure how your 1998 would differ. if i lock the car using the Smartkey and then...using the slim metal blade key... unlock the driver's
door or unlock via the trunk, the alarm does not sound

MB keeps changing the designs between MY, so best is read the proper manual.
The trunk central locking got deleted at some year (I think with lifting W210) but those things can change even mid-year.
