2001 W210 E55 Wagon, 2006 W211 E200 Kompressor
Need help deciding which one to keep

Hello Everybody,
Just wanted your opinions to help me decide as I have to put up either one of my cars for sale. I have had work done on both recently.
The first one is a 2001 W210 E55 wagon which I’ve had for around 3 years now, the car is a Japan import with around 60000 miles. The car had overheated last year when my wife drove it home after dropping me at work with the parking brake still applied !. I had to have the engine head “phased” (I’m not sure if this is the correct term but the workshop said it had to be done) and head gasket and radiator replaced which cost me about USD 1000.
The second car is a 2006 W211 E200 Kompressor, I know its not an engine available in the W211 in the US and other parts, but you would have it on the W203/204 C class cars. I bought the car cheap from a friend who hadn’t driven it for more than a year cause the engine was toast - had to do with the timing chain / timing chain sprockets (I have heard this is a common M271 problem). I had the engine swapped with Japan imported one from a 2008 C230, this cost me about USD 600.
I want to keep just one car and keeping in mind the price of gasoline is 2/2.5 times what it was a few years ago (Full tank used to cost me USD 27) I’m inclined towards the W211 (with the smaller engine) but the car needs suspension work as it doesnt feel quite stable at speeds over 60mph. Also, I fear this infamously weak M271 could self destruct like it’s predecessor!
Any suggestions / words of advise will be highly appreciated.
Ali.

'99 and '05 E55 AMG
E55 every time. Lots of the little-engine cars on the road, very few E55s on the road. In the USA, only 653 E55 AMGs were imported in 2001.

If it was a choice of one OR the other, then the W210 E55.

btw, who buys these AMGs for the mileage feature?? not me....
but since we kept all of them, I really do like the w202 kompressor. fun car, zippy and just zippy to use around in the city.

For sure the W210 E55, production numbers on this specific model were very limited and since it's a W210, near bulletproof durability is almost definite. The m113 engine in the E55 is much more valuable worth about 800-1,000 dollars w/ 60k miles on it, due to it's known reliability and hand built AMG quality work. Plus if you decide to tune up whatever car you keep in the future, the E55 obviously has way more potential since it doesn't have a turbo, more build space and a less complex engine build allowing easy installations. Personally I drive a w210 '01 e430 and I love everything about it. Plus considering suspension work on the C200 could cost an astronomically high price, it really is a no brainer to go with the E55. PS. did the parking break sound and alert on the dash occur as your wife was driving home? May be a potential technical problem. If you end up getting rid of the E55 I'LL BUY PM ME!

stay blessed,
Ed

2001 E320 Wagon, 2006 LBZ Silverado, 2007 E63 (sold), 2001 E55 (sold)
Keep the E55, especially since it's a wagon. You have a car that we don't see in the US and I hate you for that.

I currently own a W210 E320 wagon and a W211 E63. I've also had a 2001 E55. I'd take a W210 over a W211 any day.

Thanks Everyone,

Ed, no the parking brake light bulb must be blown as it didnt light I’m not sure if it chimed when she drove it, but the parking brake is good it really does hold the car back and it must’ve taken a significant anount of effort to drive with it on, probably the reason it overheated.

Is it a design flaw on the M271 that makes it vulnerable to the timing chain issues or is the part the timing chain rests on (I don’t know what it’s called) so delicate ?. Is there any aftermarket fix to solve this problem, either a better made system to replace it with on the W202/203 cars ? or is it due to the addition of the supercharger causes the engine to be stressed ?.

I would really love to keep both cars but as both have recently started bleeding me dry I want to get at least one other smaller and hopefully more reliable car as a daily driver maybe a Camry / Accord / Maxima if I can’t be certain about the W211 M271 kompressor’s reliability.

Thanks.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with keeping couple of cars https://www.benzworld.org/forums/gen...anonymous.html
You did not make it clear what are your priorites.
If it is cost of fuel - more than 90% of Europe drives 4 cylinders and they don't destruct themselves becouse of that.
I would just check what are general opinions about smaller engine , but worse come to worse - $600 for replacement engine ain't bad.
Than if you need wagon - the sedan will not do regardless the engine and sure the monster V8 can bring more smiles... as long as you are not at gas pump.
