instrument cluster sometimes works

i have a 96 e320 and sometimes the instrument cluster works and others it does not.and i mean nothing works no gauges or lights .i have purchased 2 clusters off ebay both were defective in other ways but the last one was working sometimes like my original wich makes me think it might be something besides the instrument cluster.if anyone has come across this and can maybe point me in the right direction that would be appreciated thank you

Clarify please, the entire cluster or just portions of it?

Sounds like an intermittent short somewhere.
Do the simple things first: pull all the relays and fuses one at a time (front and back fuse box), and used a small wire brush on a dremel tool to clean up the contacts and then test again after each cleaning. It could be as simple as this.
