I am trying to find the paint code for my newly acquired '99 E320. The color is metallic black - is this Opal Black? After searching the web for "touch up paint", I found a metal plate on top of the radiator support, it is painted the same color as the car and has many number stamped into the thin metal. Is this the where the paint color code is? If so, which number is it?
thanks,

VIN
All you need to do is take your VIN (vehicle ID number) to Von Housen on Howe Ave and they will pull up the right paint stick for your car. They have slight variations due to the finish. I think I paid around $13'ish for the paint. It maybe be a little more. Don't remember exactly.

Black Opal will appear to turn dark green in some lighting conditions. If your car doesn't it is Obsidian Black. The paint code should be on the upper radiator support. Here is a list of all 1999 MB paint codes.

Black Opal is the color of a precious stone and the color is blueish green. Not Black at all. Obsidian Black Metallic is paint code 197.

anyone...? location of paint codes on the vehicle?
the reason I need it is there's a tiny bit of surace rest right under hte gas cap. I don't remember seeing it, nor the paint chip, before...I don't know how it happened. But in any case, I'm going to very lightly sandpaper the surface rust off (very tiny bit) and then touch up what I can.

Maybe, but the paint site I was linked to above says it's on the radiator plate. Then again using the number guide on that site I can't find where on that stamped plate the code would be...??? None of the numbers match up. Jeffrey, what kind of W210 do you have?

2001 E320 RWD - Brilliant Silver/Ash: 100,000+
If you call MBUSA (800-FOR-MERC) and give them your VIN they can tell you. They can also tell you more about your car, like all of the ordered options. I think they pull up on their screens something that looks like the original window sticker.
Another interesting thing is that sometimes they can copy and send you the window sticker and/or a printout of how your car is outfitted. I asked for both, but all they said they could find was the printout.

Hey guys, I'm trying to order a paint pen, I heard these are the easiest to use for a non-professional. Need to touch up 2 rust spots/chips. I need brilliant silver (paint code 744), and found at least 3 companies that sell the pens. I'm thinking about autovisuals.com, does anyone have recommendations?

so it turns out i have the obsidian black metallic (thanks, Bansai). i just need to touch up a small spot of surface rust i'm first going to lightly sand off, and hten one more tiny spot. paintscratch.com is telling me i need to order a primer for rust spots and a separate clearcoat, but it's only listing the basecoat as the actual product to order. for very, very small touch up jobs, can't i just use the basecoat?

When trying to order the Obsidian Black paint pen, paintscratch.com gives me this message:
"The Paint color shown below is a basecoat/clearcoat combination.
1) The basecoat is the the actual paint color.
2) This paint REQUIRES clearcoat."
so i don't get it. the paint is mixed w/ the clearcoat and they also want me to buy additional clearcoat? Is this really necessary?

2000 E430 sport
I have a 2000 E430 same obsid. black. The prev. owner traveled alot so alot of highway miles, lots of chips front of hood. Ordered paint from MB and it came in a package with matching paint pen and separate clear coat. I wondered the same. If you are doing any chips large or small I would suggest getting a product called the "blob eliminator". Sounds cheesy, but I read about it on some of these forum threads and got it. It works great!! You have to use some elbow grease if you have alot of chips but worth it.Deep scratches might need two applications of paint/ blob eliminator. On the bigger, more noticable scratches I used the additional clear coat -it is kinda goopie-after I used the blob eliminator. I does add more of the clear "shine" of original paint and I imagine it protects better. On the other ones I just used the paint pen and blob eliminator. Worked fine. The clear coat does dry pretty flush with orig. paint/clear coat though.
FTI -- I found the fiberglass pen you can get to remove rust, etc. within the damaged area, scratched the surrounding paint,no matter how much I filed it down to a point. Gave up on it and used an old exacto knife to gently etch out the rust.
Hope this helps.

rhett, thanks for the valuable info.
not familiar with the "fiberglass pen". I was just going to lightly sand the rusted area as it's only surface rust by the gascap. the blob eliminator sounds like the mother's touchup kit I have, where it comes with a small plastic "flattener" one covers with a cloth to smooth out the paint blob caused by your typical paint pen. i'll definitely use it again when i touch it up. I guess it can't hurt to buy the clearcoat separately no matter what.
thanks again!
